Wait For Me

Here is my first real attempt at short fiction...I finally got brave enough to post it. It has some symbolism in it for me personally, but it mainly came from enjoying the drama, romance and mystery in this "style" of writing.

Let me know what ya'll think. =)

She felt his presence before she even looked up. The instant she spotted him standing in the doorway to the ballroom, a magnetic-like force drew his eyes immediately in her direction.

She wanted to pull free of his gaze, but like a butterfly caught in a web, the more she tried to escape, the more entangled she became.

To her horror and delight she saw him begin to slowly make his way across the dance floor to where she was sitting. Suddenly she realized she was no longer sitting, but walking dazedly to meet him.

They stopped at the same time, inches apart, eyes still locked, both wondering who held the key.

What seemed seconds and an eternity passed.

A strong arm slipped around her slender waist. A large hand gently grasped her own.

She heard the soft swishing of her dress against his legs as he effortlessly led her in a dance, ethereal music floating through the room.

The song ended. They stilled. He slowly pulled her closer to him. Finally his eyes left hers, if only for a moment, to glance down at her slightly parted lips. He brushed a trembling finger across her mouth. When he looked up once more, she saw a longing and pain in those rich brown eyes.

He embraced her tenderly but the passion was undeniable. He turned his head slightly and whispered into her hair.

“Wait for me.”

It was torture when he pulled away. With his hands resting briefly on her hips, he searched her eyes once more.

He released her and walked quickly from the room, as though to even pause would send him back into her arms.

She stood frozen, staring at the empty doorway. Those words softly breathed to her seconds before, now echoed in her soul. “Wait for me…wait for me.” He needn’t have asked. Her heart gave her no choice than to wait.

When she dared breathe again, she realized she was seated.
